Crafting a custom scent is a fun way to express yourself and bring some fun into your daily routine. Personal fragrance layering is one of my favorite ways to achieve a unique signature scent. Layering scents adds complexity and depth that is difficult to achieve with perfume alone. Through intentionally layering fragrance notes within your personal care routine, you’ll achieve a scent that’s longer lasting, and truly unique to you.
Understanding fragrance notes is key to building your custom scent, so let’s take a quick lesson! A fragrance consists of three main notes: top, middle (heart), and base. Each of these notes has a different job.
Now for the fun part - let’s build your custom fragrance!
Step One: Base Scent
As mentioned above, these notes are typically musky or sweet and will form the foundation for the rest of your fragrance, as well as keep you smelling lovely all day long. I start my routine with my body wash. My go-to’s are cedar eucalyptus or cashmere and vanilla, depending on what I’m feeling that day. If you lean more towards earthy scents, cedarwood or sandalwood are a great option. If you prefer more luxe or cozy scents, try something with vanilla or amber.
Step Two: Middle Notes
Okay, you’ve lathered, and rinsed, and you’re ready for step two! We’re adding our middle notes now, and my favorite way to do this is in the form of a moisturizer! I have been loving body oil this winter when my skin needs a little extra love, but lotion is great too! I try to focus here on bolder florals. I love to pair lavender with earthier bases and rose with more romantic, sweet bases. If florals aren’t your thing, you could lean more into the spice category, and try something with cinnamon or clove! I love our chai body oil to hit those spicy notes.
Don't be afraid to experiment! If you're local to us, you can even buy as little as half an ounce of a product in our refillery to test it out!
Step Three: Top Notes
We’re getting somewhere now, and it’s time to add the final touch with top notes! The foundation for your fragrance is done, so now it’s time to get creative with top notes!! I love to finish off my fragrance with one of our plant-based perfumes. My favorite will always be cardamom + grapefruit. The light, playful sweetness of the grapefruit balances out the moodier, more romantic middle and base notes of spice and vanilla. It softens the boldness and brings everything together. Light florals work really well here too - gardenia is one of my favorites, as well as herbs like sage or patchouli! Keep in mind that your top notes are what people will perceive first, but they won’t linger as long as your base and heart notes. Once you find a top note that ties together the rest of your fragrance, you’re done!
My perfume typically lingers in my hair and on my clothes, while the base and middle notes are applied directly to my skin. This adds a really nice subtle complexity that brings all of the notes of the fragrance together.
Creating a signature scent that is unique to you is a really fun way to express yourself and your identity. I love to switch it up depending on my mood or my activity. With a few basic staples, you can create a lot of unique scent combinations. We have a wide variety of scented products for you to play around with, though we always recommend using what you have first. Our products are also always phthalate, paraben, and mutagen-free. So you can smell great, without having to worry about what’s going on your body.
So be creative, have fun, and discover your new signature scent! If you create a combo that you love with your FD Market products, make sure to share it with us on socials! We love seeing what you create!
]]>Let’s start with the basics, what are essential oils anyway?
Essential oils are a concentrated plant extract. They retain the natural smell, essence and flavor of their plant source. These oils are obtained through either mechanical pressing or distillation. Each essential oil has a unique composition of chemicals which affects the smell, absorption, and effect on the body. Essential oils have been used for thousands of years, and research shows they can have therapeutic properties.
Now, what are fragrance oils?
There are two types of fragrance oils: natural & synthetic. Natural fragrance oils are created in a laboratory, however natural oils use raw products from nature to create a complex scent. This is what gives it the natural component, even though it is not directly taken from nature.
Synthetic fragrance oils are composed in a laboratory and use a combination of chemicals and natural ingredients to achieve their scent.
Fragrance oils have been getting a lot of criticism lately, and for good reason. A lot of synthetic fragrances contain phthalates, which are known endocrine disruptors. Endocrine disruptors can affect the hormonal balance of an organism. Other harmful endocrine disruptors include BPA, commonly found in a wide variety of plastic products. Steering clear of phthalates (and plastic of course) is very important to us here at FD Market.
That doesn’t mean we avoid fragrance entirely. Synthetic fragrances can be made without harmful chemicals. There are two types of synthetic oils: typical fragrance oils and natural identical fragrance oils. Typical fragrance oils are made in a lab from synthetic compounds composed of petroleum by-products. These synthetic oils are man-made from chemical compounds that do not exist in nature. Natural identical fragrance oils are also synthetic but are created to have the same chemical structure as its essential oil counterpart.
There are also natural fragrance oils, which we have grown very fond of. Natural fragrance oils are made of natural isolates. A natural isolate is a molecule derived from a plant that has an aroma. They are derived through some of the same processes that are used to create essential oils. The main difference is that essential oils are made from extracting an entire compound, while natural isolates are a single molecule. Although natural fragrance oils do not have the therapeutic properties that essential oils do, they are a safe fragrance option.
At this point, you’re probably wondering why we would use fragrance at all, even if it’s natural, over essential oils.
Now sustainability enters the chat.
Essential oils have a plethora of benefits when used in certain ways for our body & mind. Since EO’s contain the entire essence of a plant, they need a lot of plant material. Aromatic plants contain an average of 1-2% of essential oil. Six hundred pounds of rose petals are needed to make just a single ounce of rose otto essential oil. It takes almost eight million jasmine blossoms to produce about two pounds of jasmine essential oil. Lemon balm essential oil requires upward of three tons of plant material to make a singular pound of oil. With the amount of work and material that goes into producing these oils, they are some of the most expensive essential oils on the market, and the most adulterated.
Citrus fruits are a particularly easy & sustainable source for essential oils because they contain a high amount of essential oil before distillation. This requires fewer resources, and makes them a more sustainable choice.
With the large growth and popularity of essential oils in the past few years, there has been an increasing need for these plant materials. Another thing that’s overlooked, yet important to be aware of is the status of some of these plants. Some plants are endangered, and unsustainably sourced. It’s important to avoid purchasing essential oils that are endangered; some examples include Indian sandalwood, agarwood and rosewood. Frankincense and myrrh are two other plants that are highly sought after oils, but come from limited resources.
The most sustainable essential oils are ones that are farmed and made in your country, from plants that don’t require as much material.
From a sustainability aspect, natural fragrances can be a wonderful and safe alternative especially when used in large quantities or as a replacement for rare or endangered essential oils. We carefully select essential oils when creating products such as shower steamers that require the aromatherapy properties of the oils or in our muscle balm and salve to provide benefits to the skin.
In certain detergents and soaps, we confidently use premium, phthalate free fragrance oils to scent them more sustainably. We know individuals have personal preferences, so we are sure to offer essential oil only, phthalate free fragrance, and unscented options in all of our products.
Greenwashing is a common marketing tactic that companies use to appeal to eco-conscious consumers. Greenwash marketing is defined as when a company spends more money and efforts to make itself looks as environmentally friendly as possible instead of taking actionable steps to be more green for the planet. Common greenwashing trends include: listing products as all organic ingredients, packaged in all recyclable materials, or even just using natural colors within their graphics. The new trend within the greenwashing umbrella seems to be marketing products or entire lines as refillable. Yet, most aren’t truly sustainable in practice. FD Market specializes in refillable goods of all sorts including makeup, cleaning products, and body care.
Makeup
One industry that refillables have been taking over is cosmetics. Makeup products often come in small intricate plastic packaging, which seems to never be able to be correctly recycled creating a ton of waste. Several trending makeup companies including Fenty and Kim Kardashian's SKKN started carrying refill lines, yet seemed to have missed the mark when it comes to sustainability. Fenty offers a sunscreen with refillable cartridges, which is a plastic tube sliding into a larger hollow plastic branded shell. Other refillables listed on Sephora or Ulta come in plastic pods, similar to a Keurig coffee pod, that have a peel off plastic lid once and pops into the plastic outer shell. There seems to be a common theme here with plastic on plastic on plastic!
At FD Market we carry Elate Beauty products which are all packaged in bamboo outer shells or recyclable glass. Several of the products within the line have refillable options which have no plastic packaging and are purchased in paper sleeves that are easily biodegradable.
Home Cleaning Products
Several home cleaning brands are now carrying refillable products, yet majority are just purchased in a larger plastic bottle than the regular option. Also, some refills from Method can be bought without the plastic spray nozzle lid, but still come in the same plastic container. In theory this does cut down on a little plastic as you need to purchase less frequently with larger sizes, but it doesn't cut out waste like FD market does.
At FD Market, one of the key features of our stores are our many refillable products. You can bring any clean and dry bottle or container with a lid and fill it with a wide variety of products. If you don’t have a container to bring with you, you can purchase several different glass or locally made pottery options, or pick from our community donated box of bottles. Plus you only pay for what you really need, because all products are weighted out, so no need to pay for packaging again and again. If you are purchasing online, the refills do come in those standard plastic pouches which you may have seen by other big store brands, but they also include a free return to store label. We clean those pouches and reuse them for future orders creating a closed loop cycle with our refills.
Body Care
Besides the already mentioned refill greenwashing, brands including Dove started marketing body wash concentrates that come in smaller plastic containers. These 4oz concentrates need to be mixed with water and placed in a refillable bottle. Once completed the mixture of concentrate and waste allows for 16oz of product. Again in theory this seems like an eco-friendly option, but it still comes in plastic. Props to Dove for no longer making you pay for the water component which makes up 75% of their body wash, but we do it better.
At FD Market we don't make you pay for the water in your products by offering solid body products. Ranging from shampoos, body lotion, and face wash these bars are very concentrated and last longer than 16oz liquids. You also aren‘t paying for the plastic packaging as well. We have all kinds of resources on how to properly use these solid body products as well for your viewing.
It’s hard as a consumer to cipher through all of the products available everywhere to make sure product quality, ingredients, and company practices are actually making efforts towards sustainability and not just marketing them as such. Let us do all the hard work for you, and provide clean products of all sorts for you in stores and online.
]]>Krysti is currently attending a two year long clinical herbalism training through the David Winston’s Center for Herbal Studies. The classes entail phytochemistry, introduction to herbalism, and chemometrics to understand each single herb, its indications, chemical makeup, when to use it, what to use it with, and the conditions it may be problematic to be used for. Her coursework did also include one food nutrition course, which is a topic she wants to explore more through food medicine. She shared that so much of the plants produced and grown agriculturally aren’t used to their fullest abilities. Take blueberries for an example, we all know and love the fruit, but the leaves are also great for helping with allergies.
After completion of her initial two years, Krysti plans on staying for another two years to finish the therapeutics program as well as the graduate program. Her passion for hands-on experience with herbs is drawing her to attend an Herbal Apprenticeship under Tami Sweet in Ithaca, New York where she will camp, forage, harvest, and work with the farm’s herbs.
Upon graduation Krysti aspires to open her own practice with a sustainable farm in order to grow as much as possible, to be involved in the whole processing cycle of the herbs. She sees herself doing consultations for clients, where customized formulas are created to soothe health conditions. Another important aspect for her is teaching and inspiring others to learn self-sufficiency through their own herbal gardening and harvesting practices. Currently her favorite local herbs to learn about and work with are Mimosa Bark which helps soothe anxiety, PTSD, depression, and is overall mood elevating. She also enjoys working with Tulsi (Holy Basil) at Porch Tea (another Farmer’s Market friend) which is an adaptogen promoting the regulation of the nervous system.
Herbalism by definition is the art and science of applying herbs to promote health, and Krysti applies those practices to her daily lifestyle by drinking herbal tea, gardening, composting, and foraging out in nature to make herself familiar with the local plants. She also participates in community wellness, by purchasing as much of her goods as she can locally, to help support local farms and herbalists. A big part of her personal eco-friendly journey is eating a local diet, which she accomplishes by being a regular at the area's farmer’s markets. We love farmer’s markets here at FD Market, in case you couldn’t tell! She also practices sustainability by learning what herbs in nature are invasive to the area like Mugwort and which ones can be picked or harvested in bulk without damaging the local ecosystem.
A key element to what Krysti’s herbalist training is the application of hands on creating by following a formula or recipe, and she practices that at FD Market. Her day to day work at FD Market consists of checking on the store plants, packaging orders, making the occasional TikTok, and preparing batches of the best selling shower steamers and toilet bomb products for the store. The shower steamers, toilet bombs, and carpet fresh products use essential oils as well as herbs from Macungie Mountain Herbs. In the future she hopes to incorporate more herbal practices into FD Market by hand making more products such as the muscle balm or lotion bars.
By slowly learning about her environment and letting her environment in turn work for her, Krysti’s journey as an herbalist encompasses the values FD Market strives to create and share.
Don’t know where to start? Here are sustainable ways you can clean out and dust off your home for the summer.
Clean Out, Repurpose, and Donate
A classic form of freshening up your home is going through your closet, drawers, cabinets, and pantries to pick out the clothes and other household items that you no longer have a use for. Just because these items are no longer serving a purpose for you, does not mean they still don’t have a usage.
Before throwing anything away, first give thought to if it can be recycled or repurposed in another way. For example, can you turn those jeans into jean shorts? Or bring in that old container to be filled up at your local refillery? If you are thinking about the latter, check out our full list of refill items here to see if you are interested in using that container to transport any of them!
Once you have decided an article of clothing or household item no longer serves a purpose for you, donate! Does your younger cousin need a pair of jeans? Or a container to put their school supplies in? If you cannot find a direct purpose for your possessions, take them to your local Goodwill or thrift store. Companies like Lazy Camel Clothing will collect second-hand clothes and give them a new life! For a full circle effect, go to a thrift store or a second hand clothing brand to do your next shopping trip.
Fortunately, we carry really cute summer clothes from Lazy Camel Clothing that you can browse when you are stopping in for your weekly dish and laundry essentials!
Deep Clean
Outside of removing clutter, clean outs can also include a deep clean of your kitchen, bathroom, and living areas. We carry a multitude of natural cleaning products you can feel safe using in your home. Child and pet-friendly, these products will not only clean your home, but give it a fresh scent too! All of the following can be found on our Kitchen & Cleaning page.

]]>Here are 10 tips to practicing sustainability this year. Will one of these make it on your resolutions list?
Composting
To help reduce your carbon footprint, try putting back into the earth what once came from it: food! About ⅓ of the food supply in the United States is discarded, where it will sit and release methane into the atmosphere, contributing to global warming. Instead, try composting your food scraps using an outdoor composter or one of our cute Counter Composters, where it can receive oxygen and compost properly. (You can also use it to compost some of our other products like the Bamboo Toothbrush and Compostable Soap Dish.)
Proper Food Storage
Another way to reduce food waste is through proper food storage, so you can consume more and throw away less. To aid you with this, we sell Beeswax Wraps (a sustainable alternative to plastic-wrap), Stasher bags, and Food Huggers’ food savers and glass lids.
Reduce Single-Use Plastic
The United States ships about 1 million metric tons of plastic abroad per year, while anywhere from 20-70% of it actually gets recycled! It’s a crazy situation, and one immense way you can help is by reducing the amount of plastic you buy and throw away. Eliminating the need for single-use plastic is a huge part of what we do at FD Market, so check out our online store or come in to browse the wide array of plastic-alternatives we have for you. From cleaning supplies to make up capsules, we have your sustainable needs covered.
Refill Old Containers
Another way to reduce your plastic output is by refilling plastic containers you already have. If you come by the store, you will be amazed by just how many refill items we have. We got it all: shampoo, conditioner, lotion, dish soap, laundry detergent, cleaning concentrates, even toilet bombs! Next time you think about throwing away that empty soap dispenser, think about refilling instead.
Thrift and Donate Clothes
One of the best (and in my opinion coolest) ways to combat the harm of fast-fashion is by purchasing second hand, or thrifted clothing. Many large, trending clothing corporations do not practice sustainability, or fair treatment of their workers. Many are also across the sea or get their supply from the other side of the country, leaving a huge carbon footprint in their tracks. Thrifting is a fun way to explore a wide range of clothes with a very low price tag, and see more unique pieces than what you might be used to. And to keep these places running, donate old clothes to your local thrift shop next time you do a closet clean-out.
We are currently selling a rack of Lazy Camel's repurposed clothing in the store; come check it out!
Capsule Closet
Something fun to consider for the new year is trying out a capsule closet. The idea behind a capsule closet is to use a formula to buy a specific amount of different articles of clothing in a way that you can mix and match to create dozens of new outfits without the need for a huge wardrobe. It is a minimalistic practice that requires effort at first, but in the long run, will make finding an outfit a hundred times easier, and will require you to buy less clothes.
Sustainable Transportation
You might not think of it on a daily basis, but gas-powered cars pollute the air with over a billion tons of emissions per year. Want to reduce your contribution to this? Carpool with a friend or a coworker, take public transportation, and if it’s close enough, bike or walk!
Shorter Showers
Something simple you can also work on is taking shorter showers. This may seem small, but by shaving out a couple minutes from your showering routine, you will be saving gallons upon gallons of water. Each person has different needs, but the goal is to have showers last 5-10 minutes on average. Start with a slow transition and see where it goes from there! (To learn more about sustainable showers, check out our Guide to an Eco-Friendly Shower.)
Shop Local
Shopping locally is so important for many reasons. 1) You are supporting the local economy and small businesses. 2) You are reducing your carbon footprint by purchasing products transported locally instead of halfway across the world. 3) Locally grown produce is fresher and contains less preservatives because it is not transported far. 4) Small businesses generally respect fair treatment of employees and animals. 5) Products bought locally have their own unique and thoughtful background you can’t get from just any website.
Sustainable Travel Kit
Hear me out, this 2022, start carrying your own sustainable travel kit. This kit would consist of a bag containing a couple of your favorite eco-friendly tools to get you through the day, allowing you to say “no” to plastic more than you could before. Items in your bag can range anywhere from reusable utensils, to a stain remover stick. Some ideas for your travel kit:
Whatever your goals may be for 2022, try to keep in mind the importance of respecting the earth and practicing sustainability whenever you can.
Thank you for taking steps towards a greener future!

Post-holidays, make sure to think sustainably!
There are so many ways you can integrate sustainability into your holiday and we recommend you do anything you can to help the earth (because she deserves a happy holiday too!)
Thank you for taking steps towards a greener future!
]]>It’s time for hot chocolate and holiday movies and spending time with family and friends. A decades-old holiday tradition is decorating your home with lights, wreaths, and trees! Setting up a Christmas tree and coloring it with the sea of ornaments you have collected over the years is the best way to transition into the season.
A big question, though, is what kind of tree to get? Is it more sustainable to use a real tree or a fake tree? Science points in the direction of real trees; this is because real trees...
Promote green spaces.
Every spring, tree farmers across the country prepare for the Christmas season by planting 300-500 million trees nationally. Out of this giant number, only 30 million are purchased. For each tree purchased, farmers plant one to three new seedlings. That leaves hundreds of millions nationwide, creating thousands of forests across the country that would otherwise not be there.
Christmas trees are typically grown in soil that does not grow other crops, equating to more green space as opposed to the land being used for something else; for example, a factory. In these green spaces, the trees take in carbon dioxide and any other gas in the air and pump out pure oxygen (reducing CO2 in our atmosphere). They also stabilize the soil by replenishing it with nutrients, preserve water supplies, and provide habitats for wildlife!
Grow and are sold locally.
In the US alone, 10 million fake trees are purchased per year. Out of those 10 million, 85-90% come from China, meaning increased carbon emissions and resource use for transport. The more eco-friendly alternative is driving 10 minutes to your local tree farm, supporting local businesses and reducing your carbon footprint.
According to the predictions of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (published research conducted by 15+ nature institutions), natural solutions to climate change, such as an increase in Christmas tree farms, can account for up to 37% of the reduction of carbon emissions we need by 2030 to make sure global warming does not surpass two degrees celsius. Support your tree farmers!
Recycle and biodegrade.
Real trees come from the earth and can just as easily decompose and biodegrade back into it. The same cannot be said for fake trees. The average family uses a fake tree for six to nine years before it is sent to a landfill where it will be indefinitely. Fake trees are petroleum based and made from metals and plastics. (Fun – or not so fun – fact: fake trees originated from a toilet brush company, so fake trees are essentially a giant, green toilet brush!)
After your tree is done sparkling in your living room and looking pretty, check to see if your local recycling center takes old Christmas trees. Retired Christmas trees can be repurposed for wood chips, mulch, firewood, etc.
Originate naturally, making them safer.
The plastic used in most fake trees, called polyvinyl chloride (PVC), is known to be a potential source of hazardous lead. The plastic is boycotted by many environmental groups.
Real trees are straight from the ground! They contain zero harmful chemicals or plastics, fill the air with the fresh smell of pine, and facilitate oxygen flow throughout your home.
Here are some other ways you can reduce your carbon footprint:
If a fake tree is best for your current circumstances, try to rent a fake tree or buy a second hand one! That way, you are not contributing to the carbon emissions from manufacturing fake trees and are giving an old tree new life.
Another fun holiday activity is buying a potted Christmas tree for your backyard! You will have the opportunity to watch your baby tree grow into full-sized and you can either decorate the tree outside or cut it down to bring inside. If you choose to leave it outside, you can keep it there all year round -- firs can live up to 60 years!
Go natural this Christmas!
Better for the environment and better for you: buy from your local tree farm this Christmas season.

]]>The newest addition to our plastic-free food storage collection is our Bee’s Wraps. These wraps are a natural alternative to plastic wrap and can be rinsed off and reused as much as you want. They are made from beeswax (responsibly harvested), organic cotton, jojoba oil, and tree resin. The wraps last up to one year and come in four sizes: small, medium, large, and bread sized!
We also carry Vegan Bee’s Wraps which are made from organic cotton cloth, coconut oil, tree resin, and plant-based wax.
A customer favorite for food preservation is our Food Huggers! These guys are made from 100% FDA food-grade silicone and keep your food fresh preventing food waste. We have three different types of Food Huggers, each with multiple sizes to fit your specific needs:
Last -- but certainly not least -- are the classic Stasher Bags. Also made from silicone, these stashers offer more than just a replacement to plastic Ziploc bags. Stasher Bags can be used in the fridge, freezer, and microwave (you can use them to pop popcorn), and are endlessly reusable. They are dishwasher safe, so all you need to do between uses is throw them in the dishwasher with all of your other dishes.
Additionally, the press-seal at the top of the bag is super sturdy, keeping your snacks from going bad, and the bags themselves are waterproof and non-toxic.
Similar to Food Huggers, Stasher has an array of sizes you can choose from:
Thinking about all the ways you can eliminate plastic from your life can be overwhelming, so breaking the process into pieces can be extremely helpful. There is no better way to start than by concentrating on a focal point in most of our lives -- food!
]]>Of course, we still strongly encourage that you properly dispose of the waste that you do collect, but there is a reason we ask that you don’t rely on your recycling bins to get the job done -- the process is not trustworthy.
The best solution is to reduce your waste by reusing containers (and going to a refillery!), but that is not always possible, so here’s what you should know to reduce your footprint and support your environment.
Background on why recycling isn’t a trustworthy process.
For the past couple of decades, China has been the main location for countries around the world to send their plastic waste for recycling. In 2016, it was discovered that 16 million tons of plastic, paper, and metal were sent to China from the US alone, and about 30% were contaminated and deemed unrecyclable. It is estimated that 1.3-1.5 million metric tons of plastic flooded China’s countryside and oceans per year.
In 2018, China created stricter policies for the plastic they would accept, leaving the US to look elsewhere for places to recycle their millions of tons of plastic. Since then, the US has tried different locations, but more and more countries are banning imports because of how overwhelming the quantity is.
Unfortunately, there is not a lot you and I can do about the issue of where to send the plastic, but there are ways you can help keep plastic out of landfills by making sure you recycle properly and effectively.
Have recycling bins in all areas of your house.
Most people who recycle have recycling bins exclusively in their kitchen. But to really make an impact, you should try to have recycling bins in your bathrooms, offices, and bedrooms to catch every recyclable item in your house. Trust me, it will make a difference.
That doesn’t mean you should go and throw everything in the recycling “just in case,” because that can lead to more problems than solutions.
What is wishcylcing and how can you avoid it?
Wishcycling is the process of throwing something in the recycling bin with the hope that it is recyclable and will be recycled.
At first, this seems like a good approach so that you aren’t missing anything, but the reality is that throwing something non-recyclable in the recycling bin with everything else can actually contaminate those other products. This can cause anywhere from one to all of the products in your bin to be considered unrecyclable; that can be a big problem.
There are two main ways to ensure that you do not fall victim to wishcycling:
Non-recyclables:
In general, here is what you should avoid putting in your recycling bin:
Recyclables:
In general, here are items that you should be putting in your recycling bin:
Check your local municipality because they may also take:
At the end of the day, the best choice is to reuse rather than recycle.
Even considering the information above on how to recycle properly, plastic is still rarely recycled, and can usually only be downcycled when it is. (Downcycling is when a product is recycled into an item of lesser quality and functionality). Aluminum and glass have higher recycling rates, but we still shouldn’t rely on recycling as our only method for reducing waste.
Keep your plastic bottles, glass jars, aluminum containers, and more! Visit us and ask about the many, many waste-free alternatives we have for you in our refillery or on the shelves.
If you are looking to transition to a zero-waste routine in a specific area of your life, browse through previous blog posts to find guides and descriptions of many of our items.
Reduce your waste. Reuse your containers. Recycle the rest. Every little bit counts!
Thank you for taking steps towards a greener future!

]]>The first suggestion is to shorten your shower time. Not only does this save YOU time, it saves a lot of water. In a 10 minute shower alone, with a standard shower head, about 25 gallons of water is used! The goal time is around five minutes, but for most, this can’t happen overnight; it’s a transition. Every day, try cutting off a little more time until you reach your goal. However small it may seem, it will make a huge difference over time.
The next suggestion is to switch over to solid shampoo and conditioner and body soaps. Oftentimes, liquid shampoos and body washes contain over 50% water, while our solid bars are a concentrate of just the simple, natural ingredients you need. Because of this, the solid forms require way less energy to manufacture and to transport, greatly reducing your carbon footprint. (For a guide on how to use shampoo and conditioner bars, check out this blog post!)
We carry four different types of HiBar Solid Shampoo and Conditioner bars and five types of Butter + Lye Face and Body Soaps; they are all formulated slightly different to match your personal needs! The natural and gentle ingredients in the Butter + Lye soaps work for your standard full-body wash as well as a soft, facial cleanse. (Check out our website or talk to us in-store to learn more about our varieties and what works best for you!).
To pair with your body soap, we have Woven Soap Bags. These bags serve four amazing purposes: to reduce waste by extending soap life, to add exfoliation to your shower ritual, to lather your soap bar, and to help travel with your soap. Simply put the remaining pieces or a whole soap bar into the bag and feel the soft texture of the soap bag as it makes your bar bubbly and foamy.
For any of your bars, we have Compostable Soap Dishes. These dishes help extend the life of your bars by raising them out of water and keeping them nice and dry between uses.
The conventional plastic-based loofah found in most grocery stores contains microplastics that flow down your shower drain and straight into the ocean, where they contribute to the large plastic pollution currently swimming in our waters. To replace those loofahs, we have five alternatives for you. Five!!
To end off the guide, we have the Shower Steamers! These have been a fan favorite since we started selling them. They are essentially bath bombs for your shower! Place them out of the direct stream of water, watch them fizz, and experience the spa-like atmosphere created by the intense fragrance of the steamers. (You might also notice how they relieve your sinuses).
As always, I hope you found this guide helpful for your sustainable journey. Feel free to visit us in Emmaus, at the Easton Farmers Market, or online to express any questions, comments, or concerns -- we’re here to support you!
Thank you for taking steps towards a greener future!
]]>Aside from the fact that our deodorants are sustainably packaged, there are a couple differences between your conventional deodorant and natural deodorant. I’m sure you will love our deodorant just as much, or even more than your average plastic-packaged deodorant -- just give it a chance!
What’s the difference between conventional and natural deodorant?
The main difference that you will notice is the presence or absence of antiperspirants. Antiperspirants are aluminum-based ingredients that temporarily block your pores from releasing sweat. While most store-bought deodorants contain antiperspirants, natural deodorants do not.
In addition to the antiperspirants, conventional deodorants contain alcohol-based ingredients to prevent odor-inducing bacteria from growing on your skin (the actual deodorant part). Many deodorants then also contain preservatives, synthesized fragrances, and other chemicals that make the deodorant stick to your skin. Although none of these ingredients are proven to be damaging to your health, for those with sensitive skin, it can cause irritation and rashes.
The better alternative to those with sensitive skin or those who prefer all natural ingredients is natural deodorant. Natural deodorants often contain baking soda or magnesium hydroxide to prevent odor, as a substitute for alcohol-based ingredients. The Natural Deodorant and Deodorant Cream we carry use magnesium hydroxide because it is gentle on skin (and is better for sensitive skin types). In addition to the odor-preventing base, natural deodorants usually contain arrowroot to absorb moisture, coconut oil, shea butter, and essential oils for scent.
Ultimately, natural deodorants will make your skin happier by not blocking any pores or inducing any irritation, but the choice is up to you! To ensure that your natural deodorant works, we suggest detoxing your underarms with the assistance of our Underarm Detox Bar.
The best way to switch to natural deodorant is by using our Underarm Detox Bar.
The detox bar will exfoliate your underarm pores and help your skin release any aluminum or toxins left over from your previous deodorant. The ingredients in the bar will also leave your skin soft and soothed.
To use the detox bar, wet the bar, lather it in your underarms, wait about a minute, and then rinse it out thoroughly. If you are looking to use our Natural Deodorant, make sure your underarms are dry before applying. But, if you are more interested in the deodorant creams, leave your underarms slightly damp and then apply.
Deodorant stick or cream?
This choice is all up to your preference when it comes to application, scent, and feel. Within FD Market, both products come in recyclable packaging and both contain natural ingredients that are gentle on skin.
Between the sticks and creams, we have an array of pleasant, natural scents, all credited to essential oils or organic extracts. To smell them yourself, stop by the store to take a whiff of our testers. For the sticks, we have: Lavender & Peppermint, Lemon & Bergamot, Eucalyptus & Rosemary, and Cedarwood & Sweet Orange. For the creams, we have: Activated Charcoal, Coconut, and Jasmine Green Tea.
The feel is something you should try for yourself! Try out our deodorant sticks and cream and see which one suits you. From there, keep visiting us in-store, online, or at the van to repurchase when you run out.
I hope this was helpful for you and your self-care journey!
If you are still thinking about whether or not you should make the switch, just try it out! If you are someone who loves our natural deodorant, feel free to let us know in-person or on social media, so we can continue to reassure our customers of how amazing it is!
Thank you for taking steps towards a greener future!

]]>Plastic Free July: Home Refillery
It’s Plastic Free July! In the world of FD Market, we aspire to be plastic-free every month, but to encourage you to jump head-first into the eco-friendly world, we are holding unique specials each week for specific products.
The 22nd-31st is Home Refillery!
What does that mean exactly? This week's theme includes all refill items in our store or at the van that can be used for household activities. For this next week, you have the opportunity to receive 10% off any home refillery item when you bring in your own container!
Why should you care?
Between 1950-2018, 6 billion tons of plastic was manufactured, with only 9-12% actually being recycled or incinerated. The materials in these plastics are dangerous, and when not disposed of properly, can pollute our food, water, and air. When some plastics reach high enough temperatures, they will begin a process known as “leaching,” where the toxic chemicals in those plastics will begin to leak out and pollute the surrounding area.
An estimated 8 million tons of plastic is released into the ocean every single year. Out of the 500 million plastic bags produced globally, about 13 million tons end up in the ocean, killing about 100,000 marine life. Let me repeat that: 100,000 marine lives just from those plastic bags found in most grocery stores! The sad truth, scientists predict that by 2050, oceans will contain more plastics than fish based on weight.
The largest culprit: plastic packaging. It is estimated that by 2050, the amount of plastic packaging being produced will have quadrupled (since 2015), meaning there will be about 318 million tons of plastic packaging produced yearly (more than the total amount of plastic being produced now).
So what does that look like? Imagine plastic… everywhere. When you go to the beach, for example, plastic will coat the top of the sand like tar to pavement, flood the waves as if it's part of them, and bounce down the shoreline like tumbleweeds in a dry desert. Your beach vacation will become a don’t-step-on-the-plastic obstacle course. By then, it may be too late to fix it.
I know I just threw a bunch of numbers, predictions, and hypotheticals at you and it might seem a little overwhelming. But 2050 is not as far away as you may think, and a future of plastic-filled beaches will be here before you know it.
All hands on deck!
You are not alone in this journey; sustainability is a group effort and we need everyone on board to turn this ship around before it's too late.
In case you haven’t noticed, we have a zero-waste store at your disposal! Instead of purchasing and throwing out your plastic containers, reuse them and refill at our refillery in the store, at the van, or online. You will be amazed at how much waste can be reduced from simply reusing old containers. Join our efforts of constructing a plastic-free future!
Here are some products you can save 10% on this week to support our theme of Home Refillery:
All of our home products are made from simple, natural ingredients that leave your home smelling fresh and chemical-free!
Laundry Liquid: With 100% lavender essential oils for fragrance and without the chemicals, your clothes will smell and look amazing after a wash with this concentrate. Because it’s a concentrate, you don’t have to use as much for each load (½ oz-2 oz), making your refill last longer than your average detergents, which are filled with more water than product!
Laundry Powder (Unscented or Lavender): Using plants and natural minerals, this laundry powder will get rid of stains and give your clothes a fresh, clean scent. Because the powder comes dry, you don’t have to worry about paying for water--why pay for something you already have?
Stain & Odor Laundry Pods: A 2-in-1, the Laundry Pods efficiently remove stains using plant-based enzymes and lift odors using a citrus and pine blend. After washing with these pods, your clothes will look clean and smell fresh.
Sensitive Skin & Baby Laundry Pods: The gentle formula used for these pods works great for sensitive skin, natural fibers, and delicate clothing items while still providing a thorough wash. For babies and sensitive skin, the pods are unscented.
Fabric Softener Pods (Unscented or Lavender): To keep clothes, sheets, and towels soft, use these mineral-based Fabric Softener Pods in the washer alongside your favorite detergent.
Oxi Booster Pods: Without the harsh smells or harmful chemicals in bleach, Oxi Booster Pods provide a deep stain removal and odor elimination for any clothes with stubborn, set-in stains and smells. The best part? It’s powered by Oxygen.
Dish Soap: This foamy, low-skin irritant soap works great for any glasses, plates, cutlery, and cooking utensils that need washing. The dish soap also includes 100% orange essential oils for a subtle, clean scent.
Dishwasher Pods: When using these Dishwasher Pods, you can throw your dishes in the dishwasher without pre-rinsing--saving time and water! The dishwasher pods do wonders for your dishes, leaving them spotlessly clean, and smelling fresh with a hint of lemon.
Toilet Bombs: If you are looking for an easy way to clean even the dirtiest areas of your home, you found the right product! These toilet bombs can also be used to freshen up toilet bowls, garbage disposals, holding tanks, and anything else that needs cleaning. They smell minty and refreshing and something you need for your bathrooms. Simply plop it in the toilet, let fizz for 3-5 minutes, scrub, and flush.
Carpet Fresh: A rich blend of essential oils and Sodium Bicarbonate leaves your carpet feeling clean and smelling of fresh lemon and grapefruit. To use, simply sprinkle on your carpet, let sit, and vacuum to see the magic of Carpet Fresh.
Power Scour: Similar to Carpet Fresh, Power Scour is a mixture of Sodium Bicarbonate and essential oils, but this time with scents of Peppermint and Tea Tree. Power Scour is used for deodorizing, whitening, and scrubbing, with anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial properties that leave your surfaces clean without the extra chemicals. To use, spray a solution, sprinkle the powder, and scrub.
All Purpose Cleaner: Say hello to an eco-friendly and people-friendly cleaner that gets the job done! This 100% plant and mineral based cleaner provides a biodegradable, non-toxic solution to a messy problem. Using a rich blend of essential oils, this cleaner leaves your surfaces smelling and looking amazing. Like most of our cleaning products, this all purpose cleaner comes as a concentrate so you aren’t paying for a bottle of water! After purchasing the concentrate, all you have to do is add warm water, shake to activate, spray on the surface (without cracks or crevices), and wipe away the grease and grime.
Shower and Bath Cleaner: Similar to the All Purpose Cleaner, the Shower and Bath Cleaner is also a concentrate and is biodegradable and non-toxic. After diluting and activating the cleaner, spray on toilets, showers, bathtubs, sinks, and any other bathroom surface that needs cleaning (without cracks or crevices). Then use a wet sponge to wipe away any soap scum or grime. The only remaining smell will be the essential oil mix of lavender, citrus, and sage.
Fruit and Veggie Wash: After spending the day at the farmer's market purchasing fresh produce, give it a deep cleanse with our Fruit and Veggie Wash. This product works to gently remove dirt and residue from your fruits and veggies, leaving you with clean, new goods!
Thank you for supporting Plastic Free July: Home Refillery!
Visit us in our store in Emmaus or at our van at your local farmer’s market to reuse and refill on our home refillery products. Remember: if you bring your own container, you can receive 10% off your home refill!

The week of July 15th-21st is Self Care!
What does that mean exactly? This week’s theme of self-care encompasses all beauty and self-care products that are not in the refillery. For us, that is a lot of products! During this week, if you spend $25 or more on those products in the store, at the van, or online, you will receive a free sample from Elate Cosmetics!
Why should you care?
If you haven’t already, check out our blog post on Beauty Refillery to learn about plastic in the beauty industry.
Another problem in the beauty and self-care industry: chemicals. Federal law does not require the ingredients in personal care products to have FDA approval before being put on the shelves. That means anything goes. Any chemical a company wants to put in their products, they can (well, not quite everything, but more than you would think).
The unfortunate truth is that there are ingredients in a lot of beauty products that are harmful to our bodies. People forget that the skin is an organ -- our largest organ -- and we need to take care of it. The ingredients in these beauty products are easily absorbed through the skin; those ingredients may include endocrine disrupting chemicals, called EDCs.
The endocrine system controls your hormones. Disruptions to this system have a variety of impacts from reproductive to behavioral problems. Although it is still being tested, scientists believe that by throwing off the endocrine system, the chemicals in these personal care products can ultimately increase the user’s risk of hormonally-driven cancers (prostate, breast, ovarian, and endometrial).
Let us help you!
To help reduce plastic while also reducing your exposure to dangerous toxins, consider switching to the beauty care products we carry. All products in the store are eco-friendly and contain simple, clean, and natural ingredients.

]]>First, a little about the products.
We source our shampoo and conditioner bars from HiBar, a company working towards a zero-plastic world. In fact, packaging for the products are compostable and colored only using plant-based inks.
The products do not contain any plastic, sulfates, or silicon, and are Vegan, cruelty-free, and safe for color-treated hair. The scent is a slight citrus aroma, composed from essential oils and plant based ingredients.
Both the shampoo and conditioner bars come in four different types: Moisturize, Volumize, Maintain, and Soothe. Moisturize is for thick or dry hair, or hair that usually needs extra conditioning. Volumize is for thine, fine, or lifeless hair that needs more fullness without extra frizz or weight. Maintain is for normal hair, people who wash their hair less frequently, or for hair that requires a lot of product. Soothe is for typically itchy, flaky scalps to help smooth and manage hair.
We recently got in sampler containers, each with 3 mini bars of 3 different types of the shampoo and conditioner. These are perfect if you are unsure which type you would like to use long-term.
Ten easy steps:
How long do they usually last?
According to HiBar, it depends really on your hair thickness and length, and how often you shower. The estimated time is at least as long as a 16 oz bottle of liquid soap, possibly longer for the conditioner.
Curious to try it out? You can find these products on our website, with our van at the Easton Farmer's Market, or in the store!

It’s Plastic Free July! In the world of FD Market, we aspire to be plastic-free every month, but to encourage you to jump head-first into the eco-friendly world, we are holding unique specials each week for specific products.
The week of July 8th-14th is Beauty Refillery!
What does that mean exactly? The Beauty Refillery is any product located in the refillery in our store, in the van, or online that you can use on your body. During this week, you can get 10% off any of those products by using your own container and filling up on the product of your choice!
Why should you care?
Plastic in the beauty industry is a huge problem.
Think about a standard shampoo bottle. The bottle itself is probably made of plastic, right? Mostly likely, so is the lid. Then, there is probably a plastic overwrap around the lid that ensures the bottle hasn’t been opened. On top of that, if it is a 2-for-1 purchase, there is likely a thin layer of clear plastic keeping the two together!
In 2018, according to Euromonitor International, there were almost 7.9 billion units of rigid plastic created just for beauty and personal care products! To put that in perspective, there are about 7.9 billion people on this Earth. Modern humans first walked the Earth about 200,000 years ago. So, it took the human race 200,000 years to get up to 7.9 billion people, but only 1 year to create 7.9 billion units of plastic. Insane.
Often, this plastic will land in swirling ocean currents, called gyres, which will continue to circulate huge amounts of plastic until they end up inside a bird or fish or on the beaches of the nearest coastline. In the digestive system of an animal, plastic can take up so much space that there is eventually no room for food. This is just one area plastic ends up; it can also fill up our landfills and pollute our planet. Plastic takes on average 450 years to decompose! Yuck!
You can help save our planet, the oceans, and its animals!
By bringing in empty containers and refilling those, instead of repurchasing plastic, you can save our waters and its inhabitants from tons of pollutants!
Here are some products you can save 10% on this week to support our theme of Beauty Refillery:
All of our beauty refillery products contain clean, simple, and natural ingredients so your skin can feel clean and happy after use. Our products also cater to all skin types — especially sensitive ones!

Accessed 10 June 2021.]]>Almost all companies aiming towards an eco-friendly business stature use bamboo. This is because it is 100% natural and biodegradable and grows at a rapid rate with little maintenance. Bamboo is extremely versatile and can be used in textiles, construction, cooking, transportation, and medicine, making it the material of the future!
There are many benefits just in the harvesting process alone.
Before being harvested, bamboo absorbs more carbon dioxide from the air than timber or cotton plants and releases 35% more oxygen than the average hardwood tree. This results in better air quality and better breathing.
Bamboo thrives in a wide range of environments. Where other crops and plants may die from over-hydration or drought, bamboo is durable and will likely survive adverse weather. Additionally, bamboo does not need pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers to grow unlike most crops.
While hardwood trees are cut down and burned at the stump, which erodes soil, bamboo roots stay in the ground after being cut. This process maintains the nutrients and moisture of the soil and prevents soil erosion. Soil erosion can clog rivers, negatively impacting the animals and civilizations downstream from the blockage.
Bamboo requires less water, space, and energy than cotton, making it way more efficient. Harvesting for hardwood trees such as oak occurs about every 45 years, while bamboo only needs 1-5 years depending on the species; it can grow up to 3 feet a day! No other plant on earth grows at that rate.
Once harvested, every part of the plant can be used.
Bamboo can be used for fiber in clothing, bed sheets, towels, and more. The process requires soaking crushed bamboo in sodium hydroxide to produce cellulose. Sodium hydroxide has zero harm or impact on the environment and workers, and it washes away easily, leaving no residue on products.
Bamboo can additionally be used as construction material (ie. plywood) when cut and laminated. Bamboo is one of the strongest materials on the planet, but at the same time, it is still extremely flexible. This results in a product that does not break easily. As flooring, it is known to be more durable than average hardwood floors such as oak. We used bamboo flooring and plywood in our sustainable van conversion!
Bamboo has more benefits to you, the consumer, than any other textile product.
Benefits for clothing, bedding, and towels include:
When you no longer have a use for the product--relax!
Bamboo is 100% natural and therefore biodegradable. When you are done with the product, the bamboo will just return to the earth through the process of decomposition.
Where you can find bamboo in our store.
To see all of our bamboo products, go up the search bar on our website and simply type “bamboo.” You should get a long list of a little over 30 products that are either packaged with or made from bamboo. Here are some of my top picks:
I hope after reading about the many benefits of bamboo, you feel more confident and energized to begin integrating bamboo into your life. If you are actively working on living a zero-waste lifestyle, try looking into bamboo alternatives to substitute many of your everyday items. Even small changes can make a big difference.
Thank you for taking steps towards a greener future!

]]>Shopping local can do a great deal to support our community.
Especially after suffering over a year in a pandemic, small, local businesses need all the help they can get. Choosing to spend your time and money browsing through the shops or websites of these local stores can make a huge impact on their business and our community.
Plus, the environmental benefits are totally worth it.
Majority of the businesses on this list are working towards a greener planet by being environmentally conscious in considering their products, packaging, and shipping materials.
There are so many local businesses in the Lehigh Valley, so where should you start? Here are our top picks for businesses and products you should check out for this year’s Mother’s Day present.
Moms can be under a lot of stress taking care of the kids and sometimes they may forget the essentials of self-care.
Treat them to some organic and zero-waste skincare products. Khinez Organics, currently located online, is having a buy 2 get 1 free Mother’s Day sale on all soaps and creams! Try out this sample combination to fulfill the sale: “Daily Soothing Cream” ($35.00), “Shea + Turmeric Soap” ($10.00), and “Walnut Chamomile Soap ($10.00).”
If your mom always seems to be cleaning up everyone’s messes, you should check out Earthy Ediths. Earthy Ediths, located in Wind Gap, PA, sells simple and natural cleaning solutions. On top of that, all of their products are sustainably packaged. The best part? You can find their products on our website and in our store!
In addition to just products, this family works as a team to clean local homes. One review even described their services as leaving a “sparkling” clean home. Whose mom wouldn’t want their house to have a natural, deep clean before the summer? Get a quote and gift your mom the gift of a clean home!
It may seem silly to get your mom deodorant for Mother’s Day but hear me out. Bai-Li Deodorant is environmentally-friendly with its plastic-free packaging and their product is natural and good for your skin. It is a great alternative to “regular” deodorant found in most stores. Their products are fragrance-free, but they still come in a variety of fun natural scents: lavender & peppermint, eucalyptus & rosemary, lemon and bergamot, cedarwood & sweet orange, or unscented. We also carry most scents in our shop!
Looking to take a sweeter route? Try out the Dolce Patisserie in Hellertown. Chef Alan makes homemade chocolates, pastries, confections, cakes, and special orders. Give Mom a box of chocolates or go all out and order their signature cake: chocolate with a vanilla creme brulee layer, fresh raspberries, and chocolate mousse. Yum!!
For your wine and spirit lovers, look into Franklin Hill Vineyards and Social Still at for sources of wine and spirit gifts!
Social Still uses compostable stirrers made from renewable bamboo and reusable or compostable bags for all sales and they eliminated the use of plastic straws for their drinks. On top of that, with every bottle purchased from the store, Social Still donates to water.org to provide 5 months of safe water to those who need it. They are working towards both a plastic-free and healthier world!
Want to treat your mom to a facial? Book an appointment at the Deca Salon! Their services extend from hair to waxing to messages and facials. Start small with their “30 minute facial” ($40.00) or go all out with the “Green Herb Facial with Hydro Jelly Mask” ($110.00). They are our neighbors, and located at 10 S Fourth St, Emmaus, PA.
And don't forget about us! Check out our website or come into our store to find all of our fun and sustainable products perfect for Mother’s Day. From Beauty & Skin Care to Kitchen & Cleaning - we’ve got you covered. If you're looking for a simple gift, I would recommend our candles which are great for stress relief. If you are seeking a gift under the self-love or make-up category, browse through our Personal Care, Beauty & Skin Care, and Hair Care collections which include an array of products sourced from sustainable businesses.
We hope this list has helped you find some environmentally conscious alternative options to the basic “Mother’s Day” google search.
Thank you for taking steps towards a greener future!

Let's begin at the kitchen sink.
Are you familiar with those green and yellow kitchen sponges? What about plastic dish brushes? And... That plastic bottle of dish soap that permanently resides next to your sink. (Until it runs out of course, and you replace it with another one.)
Your typical kitchen sponge is made from polyurethane, an oil-based plastic that is NOT recyclable. And, every time you use it, it releases tiny microplastics that overwhelm our waterways. Those microplastics then end up back in the food we eat, and the water we drink.
Did you know that we consume an average of 5 grams of plastic a week?! That's equivalent to eating an entire credit card, every week.
YIKES.
When your current kitchen sponge wears out, I have some awesome plastic-free alternatives for you to try out!
My favorite are these Biodegradable Eco- Sponges. This is the closest swap I have found to a traditional sponge. When you originally wet them, they puff up to the thickness of your typical kitchen sponge. But, they’re 100% plant-based and compostable. They lather up dishes great, without sending vast amounts of plastic into our waterways. They are super easy to disinfect, simply microwave your wet sponge for 20 seconds. Each sponge lasts 1-3 months, but I have found that if you sanitize them frequently, they last much longer!
Please compost them at the end of their life!
For tougher dishwashing, I love this Dish and Vegetable Brush. It’s tough on food but gentle on the environment.
It’s made from teakwood and agave, and completely compostable at the end of its life. This is perfect for replacing those plastic pot scrubbers.
When you finish up that bottle of Dawn dish soap, I encourage you to give this Plastic-Free Dishwashing Block a try. This block is a game-changer! Solid dish soap replaces the need for plastic bottles, and they last for so long! I keep it on a soap dish next to my kitchen sink, and just rub my sponge or dish brush on it, then wash as usual! Just note, the bristled dish brush does wear it down a bit faster than the sponge or a washcloth. This soap is biodegradable, septic, and greywater safe. Its ingredients are better for our planet, and your hands!
Solid dish soap isn't your cup of tea? No problem! We have a refillable liquid dish soap option available as well!
Now that we have dishwashing covered, let's move on to food storage.
I know that everyone has “that drawer” in their kitchen.
The one piled high with mismatching Tupperware containers and their eternally lost lids. This is your reminder to go clean that out.
Do NOT throw away still functioning plastic containers! Keep the ones that still have some life left, but re-purpose, or properly recycle ones that are broken or missing lids.
Your Tupperware, while yes, plastic, probably still has some life left in it. Reuse it until you can’t anymore.
But, if you’re in need of some better food storage options, check out these stainless steel bento boxes!
I love packing my lunch in these. Long gone are the days of salads leaking in my bag. The steel and silicone gasket design on these ensure that they are leak and plastic free.
These are great for packing lunches, but most of the food in my fridge is stored in old glass jars that I've saved and repurposed. I have saved every jar from every jam, salsa, and spaghetti sauce I have ever bought. I just wash them out, soak them, and rub off the labels! Glass is super durable, and won't absorb stains or smells like plastic does.
If you’re just storing leftovers, I’d recommend the oldest trick in the book, a plate over the top of your bowl/plate of leftovers.
People did, in fact, live before plastic wrap and tin foil.
However, if you're looking to invest in a more reliable way to cover your food, I would recommend beeswax wraps.
They replace plastic wrap and are 100% compostable. They're made from organic cotton, beeswax, and jojoba oil. You simply use the heat from your hands to mold the wrap around the plate or bowl, and voila!
Now, your beloved ziploc bags.
They’ve gotta go.
I use these reusable zip top bags by Stasher every day!
They are silicone, so much more durable than the flimsy plastic, and they last forever!
They are super simple to wash out and reuse.
Imagine what you could do with all of the money you save by never buying a single box of Ziploc bags again.. Amazing.
As I have mentioned time and time again. Sustainable living is not an all or nothing.
By making small changes, we can make a big difference. As you run out of one plastic product and need to replace it, purchase a sustainable alternative.
It may feel slow, but before you know it your kitchen will be plastic-free.
Thank you for taking steps towards a greener future!
xo,
Jackie
